On November 2, 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) approved a new federal safety-mandated standard for window coverings which goes into effect shortly after it has been added to the Federal Registry. The new rule addresses a safety concern that was not addressed by the previous voluntary safety regulation in the early part of 2022 for custom window treatments.

According to CPSC, about 9 children under the age of 5 die every year from strangulation involving window treatments- blinds, draperies, shades, and other corded window coverings.

The new rule addresses the following:

  • Establishes performance requirements for operating custom window treatments/window coverings.
  • Addresses hidden cords in stock and custom window treatments which pose a safety concern.
